Enter The Dang Field Properly

I receive an Email... it is a new User that has joined one of our Communities, but wait, another Email follows - this one a rejection of their Registration from a mail host - the mail host did not recognize the Email of the user. I did a little investigation by tracking the IP of the person online since they are still in the mode of Registering. It so happens that the host rejected the Email because they put a typo in their Email address while Registering, so it went to the wrong host. Now, I was about to send them an Email telling them that the reason they will not be able to access our Community is because of the mistake. However, after some thought I did not bother, why should I? Time is money, I could be doing something better, actually I have LOTS to do! On the Registration form it says to enter your Email TWICE and check it over to make sure it is CORRECT. Now the same user is wasting lots of time trying to figure out why they did not get the validation Email. Even now they are trying to Post without even looking for a validation Email - what does this mean - they did not read a thing, just joined and was hoping to "say something". Thanks goodness they did not join, such ignorance should not be rewarded with seeing their nonsense perpetuated on our Community. Read and enter the fields correctly and stop making yourself look... you know.

Taking Things Personal

It amazes me how easily offended users on the net can become when they read something not even addressed to them. I know they are offended because of the angry tone of their words. They become sarcastic and begin to attack the person who made whatever statements that upset them. People using the net need to understand that the world does not revolve around them and that everyone is entitled to a view point no matter how differing it is to your view. Granted, direct insults should never be accepted, and I wonder why some Administrators allow this to perpetuate and grow in any Discussion.

At Least Spell Properly

I run a Community where guests are allowed to comment on Topics they are interested in without becoming a Member. This 'extra' anonymity makes them feel they can bash other responses within the Thread with some kind of authority on the subject as though they were experts. The funny part about it, that is not really comical at all, is they cannot spell to save their life! I was never a great speller and I rarely check my grammar simply because there is just too much for me to do online. However, if I were going to add input to a Topic on a Constructive Community as though I knew something about it then I would at least check my spelling, so I don't look like a dummy. I guess the anonymity makes all text ills justifiable though, right?

Checking and Re-Checking

Running a host is more difficult than running a busy site. I say this because updates cause you to rethink the way people use your website. Recently, I was having problems with some code on certain interactive sites. After about a day and a half of checking it came down to an automated script that updated itself and in turn disabled another script that became incompatible because of the update. One big solution for this is to check and re-check your logs often regardless to whether the information you get there seems repetitive. Sometimes one line of errors out of a thousand lines of errors may give the solution to a big problem or future problem. Another thing to do is regular visit your sites. You will be surprised to find that the latest update on a server has disabled the functionality on a site, and I'm not only talking about scripted sites, but static ones too!

Looking For Friends

By the number of messages you see online with someone saying they are "Looking For Friends", you have to wonder what has happened to real interpersonal interaction? Mostly teenagers or early adults are the ones asking for friends in such a direct way. I say direct because usually you enter a community and friendships are built gradually and naturally as people get to 'know you' online, but the "Looking For Friends" user seems to have no qualms about declaring the reason for his / her participation.

A key reason for this may be due to the fact that the computer allows you to 'appear' friendly to someone who may not want to be friends with you. In a typical community you can place a avatar that makes you look handsome, strong or heroic. You can then build yourself up to 'be' something of a societal ideal when in person most may see you as the known loser. The Looking for Friends user will often seek after people who are ready to instantly appease their needs. If things become too complicated or questionable then they move on. A basic example of this is debate. Looking for Friends is not interested in sensible topics, most times topics about self are more entertaining, so long as they are not critical. If you do decide to take on a user who is Looking for Friends, then you need to be agreeable and complimentary, answer their post in an instant and be sure to say how much you like them on the way out.

So, know anyone 'Looking for Friends' online?

Participation

I have found that participation in something is always the hardest thing to get people to do online. You make it tantalizing and yet only one or two will grab the 'hook'. It seems that most online users like to go by trends rather than personal interests, in other words... if everyone is doing it then I'll do it too regardless as to if it is what I want to do. Some online users have almost given up their minds to a trend, sadly if that trend is leading them to something negative then they are doomed.

Optimize Server or Block Spambots

I believe I have found one very BIG solution to server usage, well in fact four. One of the reasons I have been troubled over server usage was because I thought it was all the scripts I had, but it's not that... it's spam bots! If you have been tweaking your my.cnf and your php.ini and your httpd.conf hoping to get server performance only to see that you need to keep restarting your server then here may be the secret solution you have been looking for:

1. Stop spam bots from taking up your bandwidth. You can do this through a .htaccess block on certain domains / IPs. You can also set up security checks to ensure that these bots that may be running scripts and injections are not constantly attempting to post rubbish on your sites. You will be amazed that spam bots may actually be 80-90% of the 'guests' that you see in [Who's Online] within your Forum.

2. Stop lower search engine bots from checking out every single link. You can block those through the same method in #1. Really you only need the major search engines to pass through your turf, not the whole crowd.

3. Make sure you default pages are fast loading. In other words when someone cannot find anything or the spam bots are caught then make sure to lead them to a fast page, not a page that loads intense amounts of scripts. I think this is key for people that administer communities as sometimes the default pages of these communities lead them to lots of queries.

4. Make sure your interactive scripts and databases are at optimal performance. Of course I can dedicate an entire page or several pages to that, but that is another issue. I would dare say that numbers 1,2, and 3 are the most critical since no one creates a script or database to fail, generally everyone writes good code and it can just be tweaked afterwards.

Network Security

Of recent I have been taking extra measures to secure the network. I have found that using a central script that can be updated is just one of the best ways to cover exploits. You can make an include in your regular scripts to call the centralized code before your script starts executing commands, this way checks are made first. Of course logging events is critical. Some other things to consider:

1. Do not allow the user to see PHP or MySQL error messages. You can change that setting in the php.ini file.
2. Ensure that you learn how interactive scripts work and their vulnerabilities.
3. Stay up to date with your script's patches. If you are using a script published by someone else then check regularly to see if any security issues have come up.
3. Measure and review activity. Are attacks or spammers coming from a certain place, a certain country?

The best way to think is... if I wanted to escape this, by pass that, then what I do? Once you answer that then you will know where you need to secure.

Kill The SpamBots

For the past few days I have been working night and day to try and control CPU usage on the server. It has been slowing down things a lot. At first I thought it was the main Community, so I took out many of the querries for reminder services, raffel and extra things Members rarely use. I will bring reminders back, but not globally, only on certain pages. Nevertheless this did not cure the problem, so after making many checks, tweaking my.cnf and httpd.conf and still coming up empty handed I decided to do something unconventional... allow spam bots to do their thing so I could see where the activity was had. Before I blocked spam bots, but blocking them from forms does not do much if they are still attempting to post, so I instead looked up IPs, host names and created a .htaccess file to cover it.

The other problem was some of our huge databases, not really the databases themselves, but the fact that with a harvest bot checking a database out several thousand times is going to cause problems. We still have another DB that is large and I am monitoring it... if things get out of hand I will make it a login feature for members only. I would like to thank everyone for their patience.

A True Debater

True debate is hard to find these days. Often I see a heated Topic end in one of three ways:

1. Direct insults from one side or both
2. Breaking policy to satisfy position
3. Silence from one side

What is a Discussion Forum for if people do not give a position and their sources for that position. What is Discussion if you do not bring up a unique or controversial idea and then defend it? Nothing more boring than Discussion where everyone says, "I agree", "I think the same way too"... already I'm falling to sleep. Disagree, share how you feel, let others know that you are not a robot!
